Agogo Bells to Xylophone

Nigel's review of Maggie Cotton’s classroom tuition book “Agogo Bells to Xylophone”

Maggie Cotton’s book is a very welcome addition to the literature available for the classroom music teacher.

It is particularly good in that it is written from the standpoint of a professional percussionist, rather than that of somebody working in musical education.

One of the principle problems that people in musical education have is that very often they don’t know the correct name of the instrument they are using and consequently you sometimes get completely nonsensical terms, one being Indian Bells when in fact the instrument in question would be termed, by a professional percussionist, as finger cymbals.

So, Maggie has written a book which gives sensible playing techniques and sensible usages of the instruments throughout the range of instruments available both to professional and within the classroom context.

As such it provides a very welcome bridging gap, bringing teachers up to speed on the correct name for instruments and let’s say, the correct way of using them in a technical sense in the classroom.

This is very much a book to be recommended for classroom teachers.
